About

Wilhelm Philipp is a 27-year-old photographer born and bred in Box Hill. Philipp's work specialises in documenting the everyday world and searching for stories of the human condition, creating emotional, meaningful and thought-provoking bodies of work. An intrigued artist, Wilhelm constantly pursues discovery, searching for moments that make him feel alive.

A community driven individual, Wilhelm has focused his lens on the suburban identity of Australia, in particular his hometown of Box Hill. For the last 5 years, he has documented the area almost daily during its most radical shift in landscape and identity. What was once a quiet suburb is now becoming its very own city. This shift in infrastructure and investment has drastically changed the face of Box Hill. Wilhelm has immersed himself deeply into the cultural roots and history of the area to photograph a multifaceted collection of subjects and landscapes.

A young talent eager to prosper, In 2021, Wilhelm was selected as one of Melbourne’s brightest up and coming artists for Adidas Forum, working with the International company to produce an original body of work.

In 2022, he was one of 6 Melbourne photographers to be selected and highlighted for Chivas Regal’s ‘I Rise We Rise’ exhibition at No Vacancy Gallery, an exhibition further highlighting his rise to prominence amongst his young peers. Wilhelm ended the year releasing his exhibition and publication 'Forevermore' at the Museum of Australian Photography.

Building on from this momentum, in 2023 Wilhelm was shortlisted for the Portrait of Humanity award by the British Journal of Photography and printed in the 5th volume of the publication. In May, he was the featured artist for the 'Heart Of The Nation' article in The Weekend Australian Magazine. Wilhelm was also shortlisted for the 'Documentary' and 'People' categories for the Australian Photography Awards by Photo Collective as well as a being a semi finalist for the 'Portrait' category for the Head On Photo Awards.

2024 has already seen Wilhelm be selected for AND 23 by English publisher Then There Was Us. From over 1,000 submissions worldwide AND 23 is an annual selection featuring 78 of the best up and coming influential documentary and portrait photographers from across the globe.
