Box Hill

Wilhelm Philipp has been a local of the Box Hill area from birth and still resides in the area to this day. Since 2019, he was been working on his largest project to date, a body of work that captures his diverse neighbourhood community through portraiture, landscapes, nightscapes, architectural and nature styles of photography, offering an insight into how the different elements of the land and its people work together to that make up the local area. This body of work documents the everyday people of Box Hill and their stories, as well as the area's dramatically changing landscape. From what was once a quiet suburb has now risen 50 stories high to a miniature city outside of the Melbourne CBD.

This series will be presented in the form of an exhibition, book and short film, all of which will be released in 2024.

Wilhelm has documented these changes almost daily since 2019, seeking to preserve the history of the past and the people that occupied it that is now slowly being washed away. He invites the audience to witness the physical development that has occurred during what is the most radical shift of the suburb's identity in the last few decades and to learn about his discovery of the different faces that inhabit it. This series boasts a deep archive of imagery, possibly the largest of its kind in the modern era that features moments, people and places that without Wilhelm’s dedication to the area, would never have been immortalised for future generations to witness and learn of.

If you’re reading this I would love to take your portrait and immortalise you for your contribution to the area, however big or small that may be. I hope to have you involved in what I know will become a very special once in a lifetime project for the Whitehorse area and its residents both past, present and future.

I have been working on this body of work since 2019, with one final year left before its release. If you have any interest or some potential subjects you would like to nominate please send me an email below, or feel free to message me on instagram (@wilhelmphilipp).

Thank you.
